Introducing 5G

Introducing 5G

The Winter Olympics will bring in 5G

Walking down the street and talking into thin air, one tends to elicit worried looks from passers-by. Imagine their reaction when they see groups of people equipped with a head-mounted display gesturing erratically as if trying to bat away invisible bullets. These apparent eccentrics will probably be engaged in a mixed-reality game like Hado, in which players shoot down real opponents with virtual energy balls, writes Ludwig Siegele for the business section of The World In 2018.

Holidaymakers on a beach near the South Korean city of Busan were recently treated to such spooky action in a tent put up by KT, the country’s main telecoms provider. Hado, and other new services presented there, were meant to show what will be possible with 5G, the next generation of wireless technology. Such events are trial runs for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics in February, when kt wants to be the world’s first operator to offer super-fast wireless services to a wide audience—making 2018 the year 5G becomes real.
